Dishwasher Not Draining? A 10-Minute Checklist Before You Call

You open the dishwasher expecting clean dishes and instead you find a pool of gray water sitting in the bottom — usually the morning after a big Sunday dinner, when hand-washing the whole stack is the last thing on Earth you want to do. It is one of the most common problems we see here in Palm Beach County, and the good news is that a fair number of these are something you can sort out yourself in about ten minutes. Before you pick up the phone, grab a few towels and work through the checklist below.

One quick heads-up first: a dishwasher that drains poorly can slowly leak water onto your cabinets and flooring. Even a small amount over time can warp wood and ruin a floor, so this is not something to let sit for weeks. Catch it early and you save yourself a much bigger headache.

Your 10-Minute Drainage Checklist

Work through these in order. Many people find the culprit before they even reach the bottom of the list.

1. Remove the standing water first. Scoop it out with a cup, then soak up the rest with old towels. You need a dry tub to inspect things properly, and it keeps the mess down.
2. Clean the filter. Most dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom, usually a round piece you twist out. Pull it out and rinse off the trapped food, grease, and gunk under the faucet. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons water will not drain.
3. Check the drain hose for kinks. The hose runs from the dishwasher to your sink drain or disposal, often tucked under the sink. Make sure it is not pinched, crimped, or bent where it loops up. A kink can stop water cold.
4. Clear the air gap. If you have that small chrome cylinder on top of your sink next to the faucet, twist off the cap and check for debris. Gunk builds up in there and backs water up into the dishwasher.
5. Run the garbage disposal. This one catches a lot of people. The dishwasher often drains through the disposal, and if the disposal is clogged, the dishwasher cannot empty. Run it for a few seconds with the water on and try the dishwasher again.
6. Check the disposal knockout plug. If your garbage disposal was installed recently and the dishwasher has never drained right since, the installer may have forgotten to knock out the plug inside the disposal’s dishwasher inlet. It is a common miss and an easy fix.
7. Clear food debris from the sump. The sump is the well at the very bottom of the tub where the filter sits. Feel around for stuck food, broken glass, or a stray label that could be blocking the drain. Be gentle in case there is anything sharp.

Run a short cycle after you have checked these. A lot of the time, a clean filter and a quick run of the disposal is all it takes.

When It Is Time to Call a Pro

If you have worked through the whole list and the water is still sitting there, the problem is usually deeper inside the machine. These are the repairs that really do need tools and training:

• A failed drain pump. This is the part that physically pushes water out. When it burns out or jams, no amount of cleaning will help.
• A stuck check valve. This little valve keeps drained water from flowing back in. If it sticks, water sits or returns to the tub.
• A control board problem. Sometimes the machine simply is not sending the signal to drain, and that points to the electronics.
• A faulty door latch. If the dishwasher does not believe the door is fully closed, it will not run a proper drain cycle.

None of these are worth guessing at or forcing. Pulling the wrong part or running a machine with a bad pump can turn a simple fix into a costly one.
