Before you drag it to the curb, take five minutes to read this. Getting rid of a big appliance the right way is easier than you'd think, it's often free, and it keeps you out of trouble with the law. Here in Palm Beach County, you've got more good options than most folks realize.

First: please don't just put it on the curb

• Refrigerants like Freon must be removed by a professional. Fridges, freezers, and air conditioners contain refrigerant gases that are illegal to release into the air. Federal law requires them to be recovered by a certified person before the unit is scrapped.
• Doors are a child-safety hazard. An old fridge or freezer with the door still on is a real danger to curious kids and pets, who can climb in and get trapped. If a unit is being scrapped, the doors should be removed.

If it still works: donate it

If the appliance still runs, the kindest and easiest path is often to give it to someone who needs it. Several local charities and thrift stores accept working appliances, and some will even pick up from your home:
