Refrigerator Not Cooling? What to Check Before You Call (and When to Stop), South Florida Edition

Down here, a refrigerator that quits cooling is not the kind of problem that politely waits until morning. In our heat, a warm fridge can turn a full week of Publix runs into a sad cooler of lukewarm leftovers by dinnertime. The good news is that not every warm fridge needs a repair. Before you pick up the phone, here are a few things you can safely check yourself, and the point where it makes sense to stop and let us take a look.

First, make sure it’s actually getting power

It sounds almost too simple, but a tripped GFCI outlet or a flipped breaker is the number one “dead fridge” call we get. One good summer thunderstorm, the kind you can practically set your watch to around 3pm, and a breaker can quietly trip without you noticing.

• Check that the interior light comes on when you open the door.
• Test the outlet, and look for a GFCI outlet nearby with a “reset” button that may have popped.
• Reset the breaker once. If it trips again right away, stop there and give us a call. A breaker that won’t stay on is telling you something, and it isn’t good news.

Check the temperature setting

This one gets a lot of folks, and there’s no shame in it. A bumped dial, a curious kid, or a grocery bag shoved against the controls can nudge the fridge all the way up to its warmest setting. Set the refrigerator to about 37°F and the freezer to 0°F, then give it a few hours to catch up before you judge it. A fridge needs a little time to recover, same as the rest of us after a day in the August sun.

Clean the condenser coils

Dusty coils are the most common reason a fridge runs and runs but never gets truly cold. The coils are how your refrigerator dumps heat, and when they’re caked in dust they can’t do their job, so the unit ends up working as hard as a window unit in August and still falling behind.

• Unplug the fridge first.
• Find the coils, usually behind the kick-plate at the bottom or on the back of the unit.
• Vacuum them gently and clear away the dust.

If you’ve got a dog or a cat, this matters even more. Pet hair finds those coils like a lizard finds your warm lanai. In homes with pets, a good coil cleaning fixes a surprising number of “warm fridge” calls all by itself.

Don’t let anything block the airflow

Cold air has to circulate between the freezer and the fridge through small vents inside. Pack those compartments wall to wall, the way we all do right before a hurricane-season grocery haul, and you choke off the airflow. A good tell: if the freezer is nice and cold but the fridge side is warm, blocked vents or a struggling evaporator fan are the usual suspects. Give the cold air some room to move.

Listen for the compressor

Lean in for a second and listen. You should hear a low, steady hum, the quiet background noise of a fridge doing its thing. Total silence, after you’ve confirmed it has power, or a loud clicking that repeats every few minutes, can point to a failed start relay or compressor. That part is a job for a pro, but it’s often a more affordable fix than people expect, so don’t panic at the silence just yet.

Check the door gaskets

Try the dollar-bill trick: close the door on a bill and see if it slides out with no resistance. If it pulls free easily, your gasket isn’t sealing, and our warm, humid air is sneaking in to fight your fridge all day long. Worn gaskets are common on older units down here, since that constant humidity is hard on the rubber.

When to stop and call

You’ve done the safe checks, and that’s genuinely worth doing. But there’s a point where DIY ends and it’s smarter to get a real diagnosis. Stop and call if:

• The fridge still won’t cool after the basics above.
• You hear loud, repeated clicking.
• You smell anything hot or burnt near the unit.
• Frost is building up unevenly in the freezer.

These usually turn out to be quick, affordable fixes when they’re caught early. Waiting only risks your groceries and, often, a bigger repair down the line. And in this climate, the clock runs faster, a warm fridge spoils food here in hours, not days, so it’s not worth gambling a packed freezer on “maybe it’ll come back.”
