Why Your Refrigerator Runs Constantly in the Florida Summer (and When to Worry)

It’s the middle of a Palm Beach County summer, the AC is already running nonstop, and now you’ve noticed the refrigerator seems to hum along all day and half the night. Is that normal, or is your fridge quietly begging for help? A little of both, honestly — and the good news is that a few of the causes are things you can check and fix yourself in an afternoon. Let’s sort out what’s normal from what needs attention.

First, the reassuring part: some of this is just Florida

Your refrigerator works by pulling heat out of the fresh-food and freezer compartments and dumping it into your kitchen. When the kitchen is hot and humid — which, from June through September around here, is basically always — the fridge has to work harder and run longer to hold its temperature. So a fridge that runs more in July than it did in February isn’t necessarily broken. It’s doing its job in tougher conditions, the same way your AC is.

That said, constantly running — as in it genuinely never seems to cycle off — is worth looking into, both to protect the appliance and to keep it from quietly padding your FPL bill.

The self-checks worth doing first

Work through these before assuming something’s failed. Most take just a few minutes:

• Vacuum the condenser coils. This is the number-one fix, hands down. Dusty, pet-hair-caked coils can’t shed heat, so the compressor runs and runs. Unplug the fridge, find the coils (usually behind the toe-kick grille at the bottom or on the back), and vacuum them clean. Do this a couple times a year down here.
• Check the door seals. Warm, muggy air sneaking past a worn gasket makes the fridge run to keep up. Close the door on a dollar bill — if it slides out easily, the seal’s weak. Clean the gaskets and make sure the doors close fully every time.
• Give it breathing room. A fridge crammed against the wall or into a tight cabinet can’t vent its heat. Leave a few inches of clearance around and behind it.
• Don’t leave it hanging open. Easy to do when you’re unloading a big Publix haul — but every minute the door’s open, the fridge has to re-cool a rush of warm, humid air.
• Check your temperature settings. Colder isn’t better. The fridge around 37°F and the freezer at 0°F is plenty; setting them lower just makes the compressor work overtime.

If you clean the coils and tighten up the seals and the fridge starts cycling off normally again, wonderful — you just cut its workload and shaved a little off your power bill.

When constant running means a real problem

If you’ve done the basics and it still never rests, the cause is usually a part that needs a technician. Call in a pro when you also notice:

• The fridge or freezer isn’t as cold as it should be despite running nonstop — that can point to a failing compressor, a refrigerant issue, or a bad control board.
• Frost building up in the freezer or a fridge that’s warm up top but cold below — often a defrost-system or evaporator-fan fault.
• New or louder noises from the back or bottom — a struggling condenser fan or compressor.
• It’s running warm AND the food’s starting to spoil — don’t wait on that one, especially in summer.
